CHAPTER ONE The circuit of local pastors gathered for their monthly meeting to discuss issues and socialize afterwards. It was a pleasant spring day by southern Minnesota standards. The temperature was in the high sixties with a brisk wind out of the southeast. The skies were blue with a few clouds. The trees had awakened from winter and were leafing out. The birds were loudly chirping as they busily built nest and mated naturally and shamelessly near the church. It was if the nature was coming alive after a long sleep. In the basement of the church, Pastor Frank Richardson was drinking lots of coffee and struggling to stay awake. He was always tired on Monday morning after the emotional investment of preaching on Sunday. He was a second career pastor after being retired medically from the police department eleven years ago. He had served on the police department for eight years before receiving career-ending injuries one night. He was now beginning his twelfth year in the ministry. Thanks to his police training, he kept himself in very good shape. His steel blue eyes narrowed and focused on Pastor Steve LaFluer when he began to pontificate on the right way to handle cohabitating couples. Pastor LaFluer was a system's pastor. That is he began to study for the ministry right after graduating from high school by attending one of the church's four-year colleges and then going on to finish four more years of seminary training. At forty-three, he was few years older than Frank and obviously not as fit. He never had a job outside of being a pastor. He was the pastor of a very large church in the next town from where Frank had his church. He was very conservative in his understanding and practice of theology. "I always have couples who are living together separate and live apart for six months before I will even consider marrying them," he said in way that irritated Frank. "And so what do you accomplish besides having them lie to you? Sure they may have separate addresses but do you really think they're not doing the deed anyway?" Frank asked. "I make it very clear they are not to have sex before the marriage." Pastor LaFluer displayed a little of his arrogance. "You really won't know unless your follow them around. And besides, they aren't going to become virgins again," Frank added and gave evidence of his cynicism that was courtesy of his years on the streets as a cop. Steve LaFluer bristled. "If they are, I won't marry them." "If I were you, I'd put a tail on them and make sure they aren't getting it on between the sheets. It would be a really blow to your ego if you married someone who lied to you and were enjoying sexual relations behind your back." He smiled and knew he had pissed him off. And perhaps, that was what he wanted. After all, he didn't like this arrogant bastard anyway. "What do you do?" "I simply marry them without playing any games. From being a cop, I know human nature all too well," Pastor Richardson replied. His venture into the world of police work and the resulting cynicism often clashed with his fellow pastors who had spent time only in the ivory tower of higher education and were as a result confident that they knew the correct answers to the problems and challenges of life. He thought theories were fine but they needed to be properly applied to the crucible of life, to the nitty-gritty of where the members of their congregations lived life. For him, that was the difference between theology and practical theology. And he was all for the practical application of theology to life. "Well, I disagree. I don't think that's the right way to handle it. They need to refrain from sexual relations." "I disagree. Why make them lie to you. It's better to build a relationship with them, isn't it?" "Well, it's time we break for lunch," the host pastor interjected before things got even more out of hand. As luck would have it, Frank found himself at a small table with Steve and his assistance pastor Wayne Adamson for lunch. "I can respect your point of view," he told Steve. "It's the right one." "I agree," said Wayne. Like Steve, he was a system's pastor with four years of experience. "It's not the only one," Frank fired back. "I'm sorry but I have to disagree with you, Frank," Steve said. "I can respect that. But from police work, I just have a different view of human nature." "Obviously. Maybe even a different theological view as well. It's hard to believe that we went to the same seminary." Frank didn't miss the sarcasm. You are an arrogant bastard. You think you have all of the answers, he thought. "It is," he replied with an equal amount of sarcasm. "I guess being on the streets as a cop has just given me a different perspective about life and the human condition." "I would say so." Frank sipped his coffee. He was feeling the need to push the envelope a little. He liked doing that. "It seems to me that you and the church really get hung up about sex. You remind me of the Puritans, who were so afraid that someone might actually enjoy having sex." Steve obviously bristled. "I enjoy sex. It's just that there is a proper way." "Really? What does the proper way mean? Perhaps in your case, is it just the missionary position?" Steve turned red with anger. The blood vessels in his neck were visible as the blood pumped through them. "You know what I mean." He kept his voice low so that others in the room couldn't hear him. Frank wasn't going to let up. He was enjoying this too much. "I'm not sure that I do. Do you like it doggie style?" "I'm not going to dignify that with an answer." Frank saw the expression of shock on Wayne's face. From the streets, he knew how to get into someone's face. And to be honest, he missed being able to that. He forged ahead. "Do you enjoy oral sex?" "It's none of your business." "He's right. It's none of your business," Wayne interjected. "Okay. Do you have oral sex, Wayne?" Wayne was flustered. "Why I never." "I thought as much," Frank quickly answered and proved that his wits were as sharp as ever. "I don't think either one of you do. I bet both you just have straight vaginal sex." He smiled as they tried to come up with a response but perhaps wisely choose to remain silent. "I thought so." He smiled over their uneasiness. "You know you both really need to expand your sexual horizons. Then maybe you wouldn't be so uptight about the joys of sex and stop forcing your narrow views on others." "I do what I think is right," Steve answered. "I know," Frank said and let the situation settle down a little. "You know the Pope has a lot to say about marriage. But I think if you don't play the game then you shouldn't make the rules." "What does that mean?" asked Wayne. "It means you had better damn well know what you're talking about before you hand out advice." Wayne was visible taken back by his coarse reply. "I think the Bible can tell us a lot about human sexuality." "It does. But there is something to be said for experience. And just because you don't like to do something, doesn't mean it's wrong for others to enjoy it ... like oral sex for instance." "It's not sure about that. After all, sex is for procreation." "It is. But I also think it's for recreation or else you wouldn't be having sex after you had all of the children that you wanted." You're an arrogant little bastard, too. You must have got it from your mentor, Frank thought. He smiled when he had obviously put him in his place. "True, Frank," Steve said and surprised both Wayne and Frank with his agreement. "But that doesn't open to door to any and all sexual practices like anal sex for example," he said with a smug look that drove Frank up the walls. "Does that include oral sex?" "I would think so. Like I said, there is a proper way to have sexual relations. And I believe it is genital sex." "Well, you are entitled to your opinion. There was a street proverb that stuck with me from police work: Show me a man who doesn't satisfy his wife orally and I'll show you a wife I can steal." He cleaned the saying up a little for the benefit of the present company. "Well, I find that hard to believe. My wife is more than happy with our sex life. I don't think that kind of sex would make her wander," he said and once again displayed his arrogance. "I agree," added Wayne. "I'm glad you both think so." He marveled not only at their arrogance but at their obvious lack of experience and knowledge regarding the other forms of sexual expression. He personally enjoyed a rich sex life that also included anal and oral and other things that his imagination could conjure up. He laughed to himself. Getting under their skin had really made his day. Then a broad smile spread over his face as he considered the possibilities of teaching his peers the truth of his assertion that a man who didn't satisfy his wife orally was at risk of losing her. "What's up?" asked Steve when he noticed Frank's smile. "Oh, I am just really enjoying our talk, that's all," he said making a nice recovery. "It's been interesting." Steve's voice reflected that it had also been irritating.
