The only approach to Singapore was by sea. The 'impossible' jungles of the Malay peninsular in the north were so thick that there was no road--there was not even a northern possibility to defend. Yet that was the way the Japs came, undetected and in force. They had sliced pathways through the jungle with machetes and made tracks wide enough for pushbikes! Yes, bicycles! Singapore, would you believe, was taken by pedal-power!
"How sneaky," all my mates agreed! Australia's entire Eighth Division found themselves prisoners of war before they could even fire a shot. And all the British residents, shopkeepers, and administrators, and the most state-of-the-art shipyards in the entire East, were just served up to the Japs like a tasty breakfast waffle.
