"Ric Wasley has written a poignant story both sad and sweet... His talent enables him to set scenes well, build characters even in such a short space and give meaning to the smallest action..." 5 by Katherine Petersen, Rites of Romance Reviews

It was already getting dark by the time we left the apartment. We crossed over from Maxwelton Court and walked along the sidewalk bordering the west end of the campus. Most of the leaves had fallen, and the big elms and linden trees looked sad and black against a purple sky tinted with red. A light wind blew, and the branches rattled together like drumsticks clicking against the rim of a snare drum. "Cold?" I asked. "Mmmm, nope. How 'bout you?" I shrugged. "Here." She took my right hand, twined her small fingers through mine, and snuggled them into her coat pocket. That was nice. We walked like that as the last tints of red faded from the western sky and the purple deepened to black. By the time we got to Kurt's party, she had started to open up. Things about her family and friends in Western Ohio. A small town girl who went to college because she couldn't think of anything else to do. There was a high school boyfriend who'd provided a steady date to dances, football games, and proms. Plus lots of groping, panting, and petting, but she always felt there was something missing. I got the feeling that most of what she did was what everyone expected her to do. And that now she was wondering what it might be like to do something wild and unexpected with someone who was different ... maybe even bad. Yeah, I could do that.
