Chapter 1 Diamond Jones tapped her hands on the steering wheel to the beat of one of her favorite songs. The late afternoon sun warmed her. Another day's work was at its end and the weekend was ahead. Life was good. Just as her song ended and another began, her cell phone rang. "Hello." "Hey, Baby. Are you on your way home?" She smiled. "Yup, I'm almost there." "Girl, what the hell are you listening to?" the person gasped in her ear. "Are you still listening to that oldies station?" Diamond laughed. "You know I like this station." "Girl, The Temptations are old farts now, leave them and their old stuff in the past and get with some Usher and Ludicris. That's real music." "Whatever, Tia." She chuckled, turning the music down. "Are you coming out to Atlanta or what?" "I'm already enroute. You know how I feel about the speed limit." "Yes, yes, it's merely a suggestion." "That's right," her friend agreed. "So I should be there in about an hour." Tia Johnson was on her way to spend a weekend of fun with her. She was the closest thing Diamond had to a sister. Tia's father and Diamond's father were best friends and their families had lived down the street from one another most of their lives. Since Tia was an only child and Diamond the only girl in a house full of boys, they became fast friends. Tia's new position moved her to Indiana recently and they were having trouble adjusting to the new situation of living miles apart from one another. Diamond pulled into her driveway and went into the house. Kicking off her shoes, she dropped her keys on the little table by the door and walked into the kitchen. She stuck her head in the refrigerator and looked around. Pushing aside a container of orange juice, a half gallon of milk and a bottle of white wine, she grabbed one of the many cans of Coke in the back. Taking it up the back steps with her she stopped to check the room Tia would use during her visit. The room's wallpaper resembled a forest. It had different kinds of trees of all sizes that almost reached the ceiling, which was painted sky blue with fluffy white clouds. In each corner were huge living potted plants that looked like mini trees. Walking across the thick Hunter green carpet, she pulled the cover back on the four-poster brass bed to make sure it too, was ready for her arrival. Satisfied, she took a sip of her pop and went down the hall to her own room. She put the Coke down on her vanity and flipped on the stereo that sat on the dresser nearby. The room was deep purple, trimmed in black. The ceiling, painted black with glow in the dark moons, stars, and constellations glued to it, resembled the night sky. Dancing around the room, she moved to a small dresser by her bed. Yanking out some underwear, she kissed her hand and tapped it against the picture on the wall of an African American man reclining naked on a beach. Dropping the underwear on the bed, Diamond bowed to the pictures of the African Queens on the wall as she passed, then danced her way to the closet. Pulling out the desired outfit, she bounced her head to the song and took a final sip of her pop before walking into the bathroom. * * * *Whipping onto Diamond's street, Tia screeched into her driveway. She walked into the house and up the stairs, calling Diamond's name. "Hey girl, I made it," Tia said, walking into her bedroom and dropping her bag. After she'd finished tying her shoes, Diamond met her friend in the middle of the floor. "Yes, I see that. I missed you." Tia's chestnut brown hair bounced around her head as they hugged. Diamond felt almost childlike against Tia's Amazon warrior-like physique. The little ringlets on the top of her short haircut only reached Tia's shoulders. "Whatever, girl," Tia said jokingly and released her. "We talk almost every other day." "Yeah, but it took you six months to come home. So it's not the same." "Yeah, I know," Tia said as she leaned against the wall. "So what's up for tonight?" Diamond sat at her vanity pulling a lipstick from her makeup case. "Well, I was thinking about dinner at that new restaurant downtown, the Floating Sake Hut." "That's cool. Let me freshen up and we can go." After a short while, Diamond called out to her, "I'm going downstairs, I'll meet you outside!" By the time Diamond reached the stairs Tia pushed past her, ran down the stairs and out the door, giggling like a schoolgirl. Shaking her head, she laughed and continued down the stairs. * * * *
