Chapter One
Fallon gripped her lover's shoulders, denting his skin with her fingertips as her climax peaked. He weighted her down on the bed with the brawn of his chest, but not enough to stop the ache in her nipples. His hips flexed, pumping at a steady rhythm.
"Like that," she moaned. "Just like that."
His heated breath bathed her face. She inhaled the scent of him, unable to place the fragrance of his cologne. The intensity of her climax grew, heightening the level of euphoria. She just wanted him to abuse her body with every ounce of his lust, whatever it took to alleviate the escalating tremors rattling her insides.
"That's it, harder." She burned for relief. "Maybe if you..."
Rhythmic ticking drew Fallon's thoughts away from the pleasing moment. She opened her eyes to search out the annoying sound.
Her dream lover vanished.
She blinked several times, clearing her vision. Then, turning her head, she looked at the clock on the nightstand. Tick. Tick. Tick. She swatted at the disturbance.
Another night without a satisfactory end made her sigh with regret. Every morning, she awoke from a bizarre repeat of the same dream. Sex lasted hours with a stranger but ended before she experienced a complete orgasm.
Reaching for a sliver of joy and waking before she obtained it had to mean something, but what? That her life had turned to shit, and her dreams should be equally disastrous?
A noise in the living room prodded Fallon out of bed. She shoved her arms into the sleeves of her robe, knowing who'd be thumping around the place that early in the morning.
Outside her door, down the short hall near the foyer, sat a neat stack of plain cardboard boxes. She took a deep, shuddering breath before stepping around the mishmash of her torn-apart life. An icy chill stiffened her spine. One year, three months, and four days wasted on a man who didn't respect her enough to remain faithful.
"Oh, you're home." John sheepishly glanced at the boxes the movers hadn't yet taken.
He kicked a smaller one tighter into the pile as if it were an amends for what he had done to her. Nothing would make up for the hurt and betrayal. Many things in a relationship could be and should be overlooked, but infidelity, never. Especially not with the feeble excuse that he couldn't help himself.
Fallon tugged her worn robe closer to her body. "Yes, I'm home. It's my apartment."
She'd purposely stayed away the day before, giving him an opportunity to pack up and move out.
"This won't take long." He looked away. "It got too late for them to get everything loaded yesterday."
"I noticed." She liked seeing him uneasy. The hollow victory fell far from making her happy. "However, I expected you to call and make arrangements to come back, not just show up. You haven't lived here in two weeks. I expected you to get your belongings sooner."
"I was hoping..."
