From The Inside Out: A Volunteer Looks at Staying Motivated
by Julie Eberhart Painter

Category: Self Improvement
Description: From the Inside Out leaves no secrets hidden behind the facilities' doors. Through humorous and poignant anecdotes, the author, a 28-year volunteer and volunteer coordinator, takes the reader inside the heart of volunteering. The reader sees by examples how to be a good volunteer, how to hire a good volunteer and how the recipients of volunteer services perceive them. The book gives hints on how not to burn out by emphasizing the importance of motivation so that this special kind of help is not lost to other organizations. It points out the need for training and preparation before performing as an active, responsible and appropriate participant in the personal lives of residents, patients or the children in foster care. While encouraging facilitators and trainers to motivate their volunteers, From the Inside Out asks them to "be there" for their people. Volunteering--For free--is a responsible job. The pay check is your soul.

Like so many thirty-six-year-olds, it didn't occur to me that the residents of nursing homes might not want to have their emotions reawakened. Some residents had battened down their emotional hatches and were waiting for death. One called the facility God's Waiting Room. Another responded as I announced to a room full of ladies that I wanted to be their friend, "All our friends are dead." she said.

Once I'd spent time listening to them and figuring out what they might accept from me, I decided to find a common set of interests to create a link between my busy invested world and their passive one.

That day, two years into my volunteering, it was a mutual interest in soap operas that got us talking.
