He had little concern for his own safety, but he hated working like this, alone, whenever he could find the time, instead of in the circle where he would be able to try things he did not dare do by himself. With the Domain now at peace, there seemed little opportunity to exercise the full range of his considerable talents. Another war, he thought idly, would be nice.

With skill born of long practice, he focused into his matrix, felt his mind's power sharpen into a penetrating knife. With eyes closed, he saw the clingfire, magnified it, magnified it again, and again, until he was staring at the very structure of its atoms.

Here and here, he thought, are the points of instability. If it could only be made to explode by itself, what a weapon it would make! He studied it, touched it with laran, as he had so many nights, and then he saw how he might use the instabilities one against the other to make it combust from within.

He saw it, and he could not stop himself from doing it. Carried away by the rush of his discovery, he pushed against the bonds of the atoms and felt them yield.

Coryn saw an explosive flash of light, brighter than a hundred suns, heard a roar louder than thunder in the Hellers, and then he saw and heard no more.
