"Did you forget something?" he asked as Claudette walked behind the counter.

"Yes, these." She held up a pair of gray wool gloves. "These are for you."

He came around the wooden counter and took the gloves from her. "For me? But I--"

"You need another pair. These will keep your hands warm. You can't wear your work gloves all the time. They're not lined, and your hands will freeze. These are thick and--"

He ignored her speech about lining and wool. Why was she giving the gloves to him? He couldn't pay for them.

"Oh, hell!" Claudette exclaimed.
