Silently the funeral guests raised their pewter mugs to the empty chair at the head of the long table, drained them, and set them down. Darriel di Asturien swallowed the last of his mead, fighting the sourness in his stomach and the distraction of the visions that flickered behind his eyes. He tensed as his sister Kierestelli began to refill the mugs. He was the eldest child. In a moment he must begin the toasts to his father's memory. He could not give way to the old sickness now!

There would be many pledges made tonight, draining the mead casks as if the storeroom held dozens more. But perhaps it was a fair exchange. Where the casks had lain, Darriel's father rested now, held incorrupt by the cold. They would bury him when spring came. If spring came....

Darriel covered his eyes, trying to visualize springtime, to see the slopes leading up to the plateau azure with flowers. But his mind betrayed him with the heady scent of kireseth; colors swirled before him, blue changing to the crimson stain of his father's blood upon the snow.
