Less than an hour later, Cassie sat on the sofa, her hands and face bearing black smudges from the soot. With more patience than she felt, she answered the questions of the fireman in charge.

"So, you say the fire started when you were in here on the telephone?" The fireman motioned around the living room.

"Actually, it started while I was sulking on the couch." Cassie jumped up and paced back and forth. "It's all David's fault. If he hadn't proposed to Tiffany, this never would have happened. He was supposed to come here tonight. I was making him a special meal. Now look at this place. It's a mess."

"Let me get this straight," the fireman interrupted. "The fire was caused by a guy who wasn't even here?"

She nodded.

"You found out he's engaged to someone else, so you decided to burn down the kitchen to get back at him?"
