Chapter 1

Petersburg, Virginia 1865

"A man should not have to go through this," Jude Buckman swore to himself. He watched several of his fellow soldiers hover over numerous dead bodies, a feeding frenzy overtaking them. It sickened him, to look over the carnage while the survivors took what remained.

He'd been assigned to a special unit operating clandestinely, the best for him considering his hidden talents and age-old secret. His unit would go ahead of the regiment and quietly undermine the enemy from within their ranks when least expected.

Fighting rarely continued after sunset. The targeted troops would post a night watch to patrol the encampment's perimeter and usually, the evening would be quiet. When Jude and the others finished, the enemy had lost something. It could be line officers, weapons specialists, snipers or anyone who could have made a difference in the outcome of the ensuing actions.

He surveyed the battlefield, closing his eyes. Let the others reap the spoils and feed--he would not. He might not have a great deal to be proud of but he fought to keep what pride he did have, refusing to lower himself to take from the dead.

Jude Buckman respected them, for they had what he did not and could not. Even though they'd lost their lives in battle, they had gained something Jude had sought for a long time. He made sure he had no part in what the others did, his only way of living with himself.

Lucynda Benson followed the regiment knowing after each battle, someone or many would need her loving care and expert attention. A camp follower and nurse, she provided medical treatment to those not in need of the surgeon's knife.

This battle had been particularly costly. The Union wanted access to the Confederate capital of Richmond and would do anything to accomplish it. Ten months and the casualty figure kept rising but she wouldn't think of that. Lucynda had to help.

She found a soldier--a boy really--suffering from a graze to his arm. She wrapped the injury after cleansing it, then moved to the man next to him.

"My name is..." she started to say, interrupted by a loud sound coming from the distance. She threw her body over the man in an effort to protect him. The cannonball hit the ground nearby, dirt and shrapnel flying over the three of them. She felt something hot pierce her back, unaware how serious it was.

After a few minutes, she pushed herself up. Seeing she no longer needed to help the soldier she'd tried to protect, she walked toward another man. Before she knew what happened, she fell to the ground, the burning in her back excruciating.

Her world crashed in on her, her life passing before her eyes. She fully understood what the soldiers went through right before their spirits passed onto the next part of their journey.

"Help me," she tried to say. "Please..."

"Don't worry, Miss, I will."

She heard his voice comforting her and she relaxed. Somehow, she trusted this man, unaware who had come to her aid.

Jude saw the angel of the battlefield fall over the man when an incoming cannonball came at them. He saw the fragmentation hit her, his eyesight more acute than most men's. As soon as the smoke had cleared, he looked toward her. She pushed herself to continue caring for the wounded, ignoring the bloody hole in her back. He saw the man she protected die, then she fell over, rolling to her back and pleading for help.

Even from a distance, his acute hearing heard her every word. Her voice sweet music, it drew him to her. Seeing her up close, he saw perfection. With her golden hair, blue eyes and her beauty, this angel pulled at his devil's heart.

"Help me, please," she begged. "I feel so cold."

The word cold brought him back to the present. He looked at her, paling with each second of her life leaving her. He had to do something, but here would not be the place. He had to move her to some secluded spot in order to save her.

Jude took his jacket off and carefully wrapped it around her, not wanting to move her anymore than necessary. He easily lifted her up, her small frame fitting perfectly in his protective arms. Quickly, he disappeared with her leaving the battlefield behind them.

During the time he'd spent scouting the area, he'd found an abandoned cabin nestled in a small thicket. Out of the way and off the beaten path, no one had visited it in a long while, the place exactly what he wanted.
