A tingle of excitement rushed through her body. Sam Doty. She'd had a crush on him from the minute she'd laid eyes on his tall, lanky frame in the sixth grade. Never got around to telling him though.

He shuffled through the papers on his desk. "Let's see. That would make your daughter Katy Caldwell." He held up a test paper in triumph, scanning it, then paused and dropped his gaze back to the grade book. "Wait a minute. She's got a lot of missing homework assignments. Has she been ill lately?"

Marian sighed. "No, not ill. Just heartbroken. Her father passed away two years ago, and she still hasn't been able to throw herself into her schoolwork with all that much enthusiasm. I had hoped by now things would turn around."

"I'm sorry," Sam said softly.

"When.... when Jeff died, both our worlds collapsed. Katy was only ten. She didn't understand that her daddy wasn't coming back. I guess I shared her feelings." She looked up at him. "Sorry. I'm rambling."

"No, please go on." His hand lightly covered her own.
