Patricia's--Pat's--apartment is ill and scantily furnished. Her metal framed bed is pushed against the wall, neatly made, piled with pillows, and does double duty as bed and sofa. Pat sits on her bed eating peanut butter cups and reading. Her hair has retained the same flaxen color which had enticed a horse to follow her through a meadow and nibble on her hair when she was four. She wears clean, but immensely faded jeans, and a long sleeved top which has been laundered so many times that it has become utterly nondescript in color. Her sneakers and several pairs of socks are on the floor in front of her. Pat, obviously, is a bad dresser and very poor. -- Pat's BedDo you read me? Do you read me? -- (Pat, engrossed in her book, doesn't hear.) -- Pat's BedCome in. Come in! -- (Pat unwraps another peanut butter cup and picks up her book again.) -- Pat's BedDo you read me? Do you read me? -- (Pat stares at the book in her hands. She turns it over.) -- Pat's BedDo you read me? -- Pat(Astonished) Yes, I do. You're very good. -- Pat's BedCaptain, did you hear that! -- PatWho is that? -- Pat's BedCaptain, we have made contact! -- Pat(Grabbing her head with her hands.) I'm hearing things! -- Pat's BedEarthling? -- PatNo more pot ... I'm flipping out. -- Pat's BedHello? Hello? -- PatMaybe it's something I ate. I'm trying to read my book. -- Pat's BedCan you hear us Earthling? Can you read us? -- PatWho's got the sense of humor? -- Pat's BedPlease, we are trying to establish contact. -- Pat(Amazed) Hey, it's coming through the bed. -- Pat's BedBut Captain, earthling's beds are not equipped with receivers. Let me handle this. Earthling, would you tell us your name? -- (Definitely two voices emanated from the bed.)
