Preface Whether you are a physician performing a prostate exam, a nurse practitioner doing a colposcopy, an RN starting an IV, an X-ray tech or physical therapist working with someone in pain, an LPN placing a nasogastric tube, or a lay therapist just trying to help, you'll find your job easier and the patient/client happier when you take advantage of some hypnotic techniques. Why is this possible? Because hypnosis is not what you think it is. You will learn in this book what hypnosis is really all about and how you can use hypnotic techniques in both the classical hypnotic situation and in patients/clients who have not been formally hypnotized. Hypnosis is a simple skill that almost anyone can learn to use with a few minutes of practice. Mastering the skill takes patience and perseverance, but it is not necessary to be a master of hypnotism to use hypnosis. Being able to use hypnosis to help people is another matter. It is this helping that separates hypnotherapy from ordinary hypnosis. Hypnotherapy embodies the use of hypnosis in order to help people. Hypnosis In Healthcare provides the foundation needed to understand and use hypnosis and hypnotic techniques in a helpful manner. If you really want to master hypnosis, however, almost anyone can do it in time and this book provides the fundamentals. The author, Stephen LaFevers, has been a student of hypnosis since the early 1950s, and a hypnotherapist since 1973. He has been certified by the International Association of Counselors and Therapists, and registered by the Hypnosis International Board of Registration. He received his Advanced Hypnotherapy Specialist certification via The Hypnodynamics Learning Center, and his Hypnotherapy Instructor Certification via Hypnodyne Foundation. Additionally, he is a Registered Nurse and an Advanced Nurse Practitioner. His specialty certification in Family Practice was via the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners. He has been engaged in primary healthcare since 1975 and has always used hypnotherapy in his practice.
