Grandpa Gordy My Grandpa, we call him Grandpa Gordy, likes to tell us stories. He used to be a newspaper reporter and he knows all kinds of great things. One day while we were watching a baseball game on television Jessica, my sister, asked Grandpa Gordy about the World Series. She's only eight years old and she's just starting to learn about stuff. I have to hand it to her though, she's pretty smart. Well it doesn't take much to get Grandpa Gordy going and he started right in about all the World Series games he's been to. Now I already know a lot of this stuff since I'm eleven years old, but still and all when Grandpa Gordy gets to telling a story you really want to listen. Oh, by the way my name is Michael and this is what Grandpa Gordy had to say. * * * *"So you want to hear about the World Series, do you? Well I have probably been to more World Series games than any living human on the face of the earth." Sometimes Grandpa Gordy likes to exaggerate. "Well let me see. The World Series is the most exciting sporting event ever devised. It's been around since before I was born." "Wow! That is a long time," Jessica said. "Hmmm. You're right little one," Grandpa said. "Since 1903 the National League has been playing the American League to determine the best team in baseball. Now let me see. What can I tell you little ones about the World Series? I know. I will tell you about the greatest World Series games I ever saw. I've been to an awful lot you know." "Hey that sounds like a good idea," I said. "Hmmm," Grandpa said. "There's an awful lot. Where can I start? How about at the beginning?" "Grandpa you're not going to tell us about the olden days are you?" Jessica asked. "Well now let's see." Grandpa rubbed his chin and thought a little bit. "There were some great games just a few years ago. Hmm. But then again it's always best to start at the beginning. So I guess the answer has to be yes dear. You will have to hear about the olden days first." "Um, Grandpa Gordy? Is this going to take long?" I asked. "Well let's see. There's quite a few games that you must hear about. What if I told you about one each night." Grandpa Gordy could do that because he lives right upstairs from us. "Every night," he went on to say, "after you little ones have done your homework, brushed your teeth and got your pajamas on I'll tell you about one of my greatest World Series games. How about that?" "Sounds great," I said although I wasn't too happy about the homework part and I didn't really like to be referred to as a little one. "Okay. Let me think about this a little and we'll start tomorrow. Oh, and I'll have to check with your mom and dad to see if it's okay."
