Veradis Castamir chose her husband when she was nine years old. It was, of course, a serious decision. She was the only daughter of Lady Crystal Castamir and her husband, Dom Ruyven of Castamir, and thus heiress to all Lady Crystal's estates--or at least such portion of them as survived Dom Ruyven's profligacy. Some men, Veradis knew, hunted forests into deserts, some gambled every coin and jewel they could lay their hands on, some drank until they were nothing but shaky shells. Dom Ruyven had a different hobby. He fathered bastards.
