Annie's Heart
by Barbara Edwards

Category: Romance/Historical Fiction
Description: Only two coins and a gold pendant heart separate widowed Annie Moss from disaster. The fields need to be plowed, the barn repaired and food stored for the winter, but she is alone and afraid. Her dream of a home for her children hangs from the promise of a wandering man to keep moving on, a man she has no reason to trust. Trace Randolph has lost everything except his honor, so when a desperate Annie saves his life he knows he must pay his debt, even if it means marrying her. The only promise he makes is to leave before the winter snows. A promise he finds impossible to keep.

Her drawn-back hair emphasized her thin oval face. Bright gold flecks glinted with a prospector's promised riches under a creek's flow in her blue eyes. Fringed by thick lashes, those eyes made a man forget what he was going to say.

"I tied you so you wouldn't hurt one of us with your thrashing around. Now you're awake, I'll let you loose."

"What makes you think you're safe because I'm awake? Men are more dangerous when they're alert. Ask your husband," he snarled, not sure if his resentment came from his being alive or knowing he owed her a debt his honor would demand he pay.

"He's dead. Besides" her lips flattened into an even narrower line than before. She reached sideways. "I've got all the protection I need."

Trace found himself staring down the twin bores of a double-barreled shotgun.
