Finally Ryan turned to her breaking through the silence. "Honey, it was so nice of you to come and surprise me. What prompted you to do it?"

She reached down under the seat in front and pulled out her purse, from which she retrieved a large brown envelope. "This." She thrust the packet towards him. "It's a summary of the new buyout proposal from Montfort."

Breaking the seal he quickly perused the text. "God, it's wonderful! Everything you asked for before--and more."

Raising an eyebrow, she answered, "Yes, it's good--not that it matters much now."

"But it does. It means you can quit and stay home with the boys, and I can be home and find a job in Dallas." He stopped to search her face.

Saying nothing, she took the envelope from him and laid it in her purse, snapping the catch securely behind it. Anger built inside her. Just as he said, we could have had it all.
