Mind Swap
by Marsh Cassady

Category: Science Fiction
Description: Two novellas and five short stories. In "Mind Swap" a professor imprisoned in a self-contained satellite for refusal to teach false history welcomes an alien who brings a gift. Tomashi Jones is able to transport his mind to earth to direct the overthrow of the evil emperor controlling his planet. The "Death by Stages" world has been nearly destroyed by a nuclear holocaust and genetic experiments gone awry. Actors choose their names from historical performers they admire and are compelled to ingest a formula that alter their DNA structures so that they actually "become" the characters they play. An antidote changes them back.

PROLOGUE

"For crimes against the people," the judge intoned, "I condemn you."

"What crimes, your honor?" Sarita cried. "If a man looks out for his son's well-being, what crime is that!" She reached out as if to touch Tomashi, but a force field held them apart.

"Escort the prisoner's helpmeet from these chambers." The judge was a woman of forty-five or fifty; her face showed no expression.

"I love you, Sarita," Tomashi called out before a 'Stapo guard placed a clear plastic gag across his mouth.

"Sentencing will proceed."

Tomashi felt a momentary hate before remembering that the judge was merely a tool of a government so corrupt that it simply could not be allowed to last.

"The punishment will be decided by the prisoner," the judge continued. "It costs great sums to maintain a prison satellite system. But the State is humane. And so the prisoner can choose. Incarceration which offers nothing but isolation and tedium, or a brain wipe which offers a chance, however slight, for rehabilitation." She looked him directly in the eye. "Tomashi Perry Jones, I leave you to your conscience."
