Cat Waldron glanced up at the light blue sky and sighed, wiping the sweat off her neck with a small towel. This summer in Kitty Hawk, North Carolina, as across the county, the temperatures had been hotter than normal. The heat wave had not spared them. It had been one hundred degrees or higher for the past month.
She wore a black bandana tied around her head, to hold back her long black hair. She'd had three days to get her small house ready for Hurricane Irene. "Damn fools having a summit in the middle of a hurricane," she mumbled and grabbed her nail gun, slamming two more nails into the board that now covered her front window.
"I can't believe you are going to stay out here all by yourself! Are you fucking nuts?" Her best friend and boss, Sandy Crossfield, yelled as she grabbed another piece of wood and put it up against the window on the left side of the house.
"Not another word. If it wasn't for that stupid last minute summit, your kind had to have, my home would now be covered, and I'd be all set for the storm, but nooo. I have barely enough wood to cover the windows and I had to drive fifty miles to get supplies to hold me until the storm is over." Cat jumped off her ladder and headed inside for a glass of iced tea.
Sandy followed behind her. "You know damn well you can stay with us at the hotel. I even rented the suite for you. You could lay back and have a mini vacation since everything is done, her vampire friend urged, leaning against the wall and staring at her.
Opening the cupboard, Cat grabbed a cup and turned to the fridge. "The last time I stayed at one of your summits, all I did was run around working on little things that could have been handled by Brent, which is why you hired him." She opened the fridge and grabbed the tea.
