Chapter One

February 1, 2012

Carly stacked her presents in a neat pile on the end of the table and then turned to face her dearest friends as they pulled on their coats to leave. She hated that the evening had come to a close, but loved them for the spectacular party they put on for her. And with the snow flying outside the windows, she knew it was best they all headed home.

"I can't thank you guys enough for all this. I had a blast and I love my necklace. I'm so excited it was my turn to get one, but you already knew that. I'll treasure it forever."

She reached up and touched the delicate filigree necklace with her zodiac sign, the water bearer, now adorning her neck. Another year older and another birthday celebrated with her friends. It was Addison Montgomery, her best friend since high school, that Carly turned to when she needed a comforting shoulder to cry on. And Addison, who could make her laugh when all Carly wanted to do was cry her eyes out, had on far too many occasions to mention.

"Honey, I can't think of a better way to celebrate, then to have us all together in one place, laughing, drinking and dishing on men," Addison replied, wrapping her heavy woolen scarf around her neck and then pulling on her hot pink leather gloves. "Besides, it's not every day my best friend becomes salesperson of the month for Behind Closed Doors home sex toy sales. So consider this a double celebration."

"There is that," Carly agreed, tugging on her jacket. Being her own boss was something she'd dreamt of doing for a long time and now it had actually happened. Finding the perfect job had been a little harder. Who knew you could land a job while having your annual pap exam with your feet in the stirrups and your eyes staring at the water stains on the ceiling of the medical office. Her gynecologist had actually been the one to tell her about Behind Closed Doors and the home sex toy parties. Before that Carly had been doing temp work forty hours a week for an insurance company. Now, she could set her own hours and make almost triple the salary she had been making before.

Achieving salesperson of the month within the company after only being in the position for six months was another benefit of her job and the additional perks were definitely worth considering, perks in the form of the products Behind Closed Doors carried that were currently awaiting her at home, including a large box full of surprises from the corporate offices that came along with a plaque acknowledging her as Salesperson of the Month, January 2012. The perks required you try them so you could competently demonstrate them, of which, Carly hadn't minded a bit over the past half a year. Plus, she learned a few tricks of the trade as well.

After another round of additional hugs, kisses and thank-yous, Carly lifted the pile of presents in her arms and headed for the front door of the restaurant. She peered around the edge of the boxes as she approached the foyer. The last thing she wanted to do was run head-on into someone. She could barely see over the top of the stack.

"Shoot." The top box started to slide to the right and it was all Carly could do not to drop the entire load on the floor. The lone box fell to the marble floor and landed with a thud.

"Allow me, ma'am. Hope whatever just hit the floor wasn't breakable."

The deep voice came from somewhere to her right and Carly stretched her neck to see who was doing the talking. They certainly couldn't be calling her ma'am. And if they were, then someone was going to get a talking to for sure. Last time she checked, calling someone ma'am was reserved for gray haired little old ladies about to cross a busy intersection and being escorted by a Boy Scout.

From her limited vantage point, all Carly saw was a large, tanned hand returning the small box to the top of the pile and then found herself looking down at a pair of well worn, dark brown cowboy boots. Not enough to get a clear picture of the man behind the voice. Then she felt the cold air from the opened front door hit her ankles and saw a swirl of snow whisk past her feet. The weather had definitely picked up and not in a good way.

"I've got the door for you. You're about three steps from it, ma'am."

Again he started with the ma'am crap. Ma'am was her grandmother, or her mother, but most certainly not her. Turning twenty-eight was only a number, not a clear cut path over the hill. What the hell was the guy thinking, calling her that?

Carly craned her neck around the side of the boxes and caught sight of a tall man dressed in a leather bomber jacket and blue jeans. The breath was sucked from her lungs in one fell swoop as she stared at him, taking in his vivid blue eyes. Looking as good as he did, she might be tempted to forget the ma'am comment if the situation warranted it.

She forced herself to stay upright as her knees threatened to buckle beneath her. He was hot, gorgeous and looking directly at her. What more could she want? Her mind conjured up quite a fascinating list of possibilities within a split second.

"Beau Waters, is that you? I didn't know you were back in town yet."

Carly heard Addison's voice coming from somewhere off to her left and shifted the boxes once more. Addison knew him? Somehow it didn't surprise her that her gorgeous, tall, and naturally blonde best friend would know every hunk in the city and then some.

"Addison, how are you? You look better every time I see you."

"And you don't?"

He chuckled at Addison's flattery and a warm flush settled in the pit of Carly's stomach. Oh, to have him laugh like that at something I said. Setting the boxes down on the bench by the front door, Carly tried hard not to stare at the man before her. He was definitely easy on the eyes and hard on the libido.

Addison kissed Beau on the cheek and gave him a quick hug before turning back to Carly.

"Oh, Beau, this is my friend, Carly Dixon. I'm sure you remember Beau. He was three years ahead of us in high school. He graduated with my brother Mike."

"Right, of course I do." Carly leaned forward to shake his outstretched hand. Who was she kidding? She didn't have a clue who he was. A hunk like him she would have remembered, but at present was drawing a complete blank.
