Where was he? He said he'd pick her up at 7:00 p.m. Gwen was pretty sure he'd even added, "Sharp," right before the call had disconnected. Now it was 8:30, he wasn't answering his cell phone, and the snow was almost a foot deep and still coming down with no end in sight.
She looked at her watch...again. Maybe he'd been held up by traffic and was in a dead zone to receive calls.
Her usual ride had left when they got off work at 6:00 and no one else was around, unless she counted the old night watchman, Charlie, who'd just exited the elevator and was shuffling toward her.
"Not showed up yet, Miss Gwen?" he asked. The mild-mannered guy reminded her of a slightly younger version of Mickey Rooney.
"No, Charlie, thanks for asking. I guess I might as well let you call that taxi you mentioned earlier." Gwen rose from the bench and followed him to his desk in the middle of the opulent foyer.
Over his shoulder, he said, "I'm sure your Mr. Danson is sitting somewhere in a parking lot." He chuckled. "Town always comes to a complete stop in these kinds a snowstorms, don't it?"
"I guess it does." Gwen twisted her lower lip, pulling at it with her teeth.
