Chris watched Anna as she walked away from him. Her mop of curly black hair glinted with blue highlights every time she crossed beneath one of the lights in the aisle. She might be petite, but he saw now why Redfield had hired her. She was a brilliant veterinarian. More than that, despite the fatigue nagging at him, he realized he wanted her.

Forget tall and blonde. She was the woman he'd waited for, but he'd already read the signs loud and clear. She not only was not looking for a relationship, she didn't appear to want one with him in particular, and that puzzled him more than anything else. He was washing his hands and forearms when he heard her footfalls returning. Becca nestled against her, one sleepy fist curled against her mother's chest.

"I'm sorry, I had to bring her in. It felt warm in the truck to me, so I was afraid to leave her."

Chris stared at the pale, golden curls on the baby's head. "It's okay. I'm sure between the two of us we can handle her and a mare and foal." Anna smiled and recognition once again nagged at the edge of his consciousness.
