We went for it. We took the next step. Found a decent home with affordable rent and moved in together. Then Aaron had to go and show his friends the video.
The TV in my apartment is almost always dark. No more sitcoms. No more games. No more noise.
"You have to come out tonight," my friend Tamara pushes over the phone. "Everyone's going to be there, including Tim's friends."
"Good, then you won't miss me."
"Michelle, these are Tim's friends--single, cute, and employed."
I glance at the coffee table where I've just dumped 2,000 cardboard puzzle pieces. The shapes make up a map of the world. A glass of wine glows like a red orb under the lamp, and my iPod waits inside its dock for the touch of my finger. "I'm not in the mood."
"It's been eight months. You should get out and get over that shithead already."
"I am over him. I just don't want to go out tonight." I know it will take no less than three firm "no's" for Tamara to relent.
Her quiet consent at the moment doesn't fool me. "My brother won't be there if that's what's eating you."
Reason Number Two why not to join Tamara at the club: Her twin brother Paul. Paul is, or as Tamara claims, was, a friend of Aaron's and a witness on that awful night Aaron drank himself stupid then had the bad idea to retrieve our tape. The whole gang was there: Guys who dragged themselves through the workweek waiting for their moment to converge and slug around our living room in one obnoxious group. They didn't have a trace of ambition among them, except maybe Nate who was doing freelance photography for several local periodicals.
