Chapter 1

His set long over, Scott "Doc" Callahan sat in his dressing room at a small honkytonk located off Nashville's main drag and wondered where he'd end up this evening. Usually after a gig, he went out on the town and found a game of poker--sometimes a normal game or he'd try his hand at something more high stakes.

"Hey, Doc, we found one for you down the street--a private game."

"How private?"

"A couple of other singers," John said. "Nothing major but the money's big--winner take all."

"And I can get in?"

"They're saving you a seat."

"I'm on my way."

"Are you sure about this?" his friend asked. "You've been on an expensive losing streak of late."

"I'm sure," he assured his friend. "I'm all right."

"I still wish you'd see someone. You can't go on like this much longer."

"I'm fine and I will hit a winning streak soon--I always do."

"But what if you don't?"

Once the door closed behind his friend, Doc gathered his things then looked in the mirror.

"It will turn around," he assured his reflection. "It has to."

Lindy Hartnell heard about the same game and asked about being included. She'd been in need of some additional funds and she'd been good at the tables the week before in Atlantic City. If she could get a couple thousand dollars more, she'd be able to pay off some debts and go on with her life.

With her mother's death toward the end of November, she'd needed to find some money to clear her debts while remaining above water. The last thing she wanted would be having this hang over her for any length of time. No, that will not happen...

She'd been earning a good wage as a musician and had been nominated for several prestigious awards but always fell short to someone who played on the winning song or album at the awards event. It seemed to her that unless a musician backed someone like Martina McBride or Reba, somehow the powers that be overlooked them and some real talent had suffered the same fate she had. Of course, that had happened over the course of history in the entire music business.

Lindy remembered a big name star making an album that totally went against the way his career had been laid out for him by the record label. While the critics loved it, sales had been slower than on his usual work and when it came time for awards, they forgot he existed.

One award on her resume would be a huge help for getting better gigs but for now, she had to bide her time and do what she had to in order to survive by doing what she loved.

Checking her look in the mirror, she made sure the blouse she wore opened just enough to be distracting to the other players. Between her ample cleavage and the tightness of her clothes, she wanted to be a major distraction--Lindy on a mission. Yes, she'd seen the women on Poker After Dark and other shows who wore revealing clothes and she knew in the mindset of the men at the table, a good view always helped to mess with their concentration.

Pleased with what she saw, she grabbed her coat and left her house. Heading to the game, she set her mind on winning what she could tonight.
