"It's something bad, I know it is." I plunged into that terrible moment when I had witnessed what I believed to be Giovanni's death. Fear's cold hand clenched my heart. Fate could be especially kind, and also cruel and indifferent. I didn't believe because we had escaped the vengeance of the Desmarais that we would never know danger again. The very nature of our existence was dangerous, to the human population and to others of our kind.

"Don't worry yet, my angel. For now just let us be happy."

"I want to feed." I reached out, and taking his hand, we slipped into the unsuspecting night. When warm with blood we returned to our home. We too fell asleep in each other's arms, much like I imagined the lovers in San Francisco to be.

A faint whisper of dread tickled at the back of my mind. My dreams were haunted by the deaths of my loved ones, pain and loss.
