Sam and I were lost. Not just lost, but really lost. It was past midnight and we had no idea where we were. We'd already tried backtracking an hour ago, but nothing looked familiar anymore except the sand dunes in the distance. And no matter which road we took, the sand dunes stayed far away. There weren't even any road signs telling us where we were.

I still wasn't sure why we had chosen tonight to adventure out here. Well, I knew why. Sheer small town boredom was why. It was spring break and all our college friends had left town for the two weeks that school was out. It was the beginning of the second week and had already run out of things to do.

Tonight of all nights, Sam came up with the idea. And I'd agreed. Why not? We'd both always wanted to see where the road leading past the sand dunes ended up, but had never gotten around to seeing where it went. The funny thing was no one we knew seemed to know where the road led. We'd grown up in Sugar City, Idaho and had never followed this road before. Until now. Now we were lost in the middle of nowhere.

"I don't know Sam, what do you think? Should we try turning around again?"

"But we just did. We must have taken a wrong turn."

"I know, but what else are we going to do? We can't just keep driving around all night. We're almost out of gas."
