The Diamond Exchange

In the case of "The Diamond Exchange," that task is clandestinely transporting a priceless collection of precious jewels clustered in gold as well as enshrouded in a country's turbulent history. Rincon escorts the national treasure from Europe to South America and back, all in the course of his dangerous but highly rewarding duties.

"Is the mask necessary?"

"Mister Barteau, you answered my advert for a confidential courier. You have flown across the Atlantic just to check me out. That tells me that whatever you want transported somewhere around the world is important to you. If it's that important to you, it follows that it could be important to someone else...one of your enemies perhaps, or a business rival...even the authorities."

"Yes, what you say is indeed true, however, I would like to know with whom I'm dealing."

"I am your courier, or rather I propose to be, and you'll see my face at the proper time. If, however, we do not conclude an arrangement, there is no reason for you to recognize me on the street."

"But you must realize that if we are to talk of something to be secretly transferred, then I must know who you are. How am I to validate your fidelity, your efficiency, your honesty, if I don't know your true identity in order to consult references?"

"You need only know me as Rincon, and I do not provide references. To furnish such references would be to betray the confidence of my other clients who also demand confidentiality. None, at least very few, of my clients know any of my other clients. I may serve one of your enemies or business rivals next month. I work for whomever will pay my price."
