Such an inauspicious beginning does not bode well for the long, dangerous journey to freedom. But as the truth and the secrets are revealed, Quin and Evangeline discover that they have much more in common than only the driving need to escape slavery. Their antagonism changes to respect, admiration, friendship, and eventually the love of a lifetime.

But happy ever after is as much a dream as freedom for the two fugitives. They still have many perilous miles to travel and a risky border crossing ahead of them. And both would rather die than be captured?or see the other captured?and returned to a life of slavery.

Alarmingly, she couldn't seem to prevent herself from running an admiring eye over the muscles of his bare chest and abdomen, visible even with the bandage wrapped around his middle. She'd seen and felt that chest and those powerful shoulders and arms when she'd been nursing him, of course, but that was different. Earlier, sitting near him in the soft intimate light of the lantern, aware that he was wearing nothing but a bandage and a quilt, she'd again felt that disturbing stirring of interest she'd felt that first day.

The sooner she found him a shirt the better!

But...

That stirring of interest shouldn't be distressing; attraction to the opposite sex was...normal.

Quin was a man who would stand out anywhere; any normal woman with eyes would find him attractive.

Which meant... She was normal!

The sudden epiphany filled her with delight. Her physical responses to a man had not been buried with Daniel! Her curiosity and willingness to explore pleasure with a man had not been completely deadened by her treatment at the hands of Master Spencer and Wendall Elliot!

And considering her plan to convince Quin to help her free Mary, this newly discovered attraction to a man, to Quin, was a blessing, not something to upset her.

Except...

Now that he wasn't being judgmental and overbearing and arrogant, she...she liked Quin! She couldn't trick him and use him like that! She couldn't even be honest and then offer herself in exchange because, now that she knew him a little better, she suspected -- no, she knew without a doubt -- that he was not the kind of man who would accept sexual congress as payment for helping someone. Or as payment for anything else, for that matter.

And she did not want to demean herself in his eyes that way.

It would seem then, her only recourse was to simply ask and pray that he really was the good--and at present, grumpy--man he appeared to be.

Her gaze flew to Dahlia, who was watching her closely. She'd whispered her intention to ask Quin's help to Dahlia while he'd been in the bedroom, but not how she'd been planning to convince him; Dahlia, however, was not stupid. They knew each other well and Dahlia had known what she was thinking then, just as Evangeline knew now, by the expression on Dahlia's face, that Dahlia knew she was not, and probably never had been, able to go through with it.

She gave Dahlia a small self-deprecating smile and moved her attention back to Quin, her gaze landing on his bare feet as he came to a stop beside the trap door. Oh, piffle, she'd forgotten he had no shoes.

Her gaze rose to his and she opened her mouth but he must have read her thoughts on her face because, before she could utter a word, he said shortly, "I'm fine. My feet are tough. Go." He indicated with his hand that she should continue down the ladder, then he turned to Dahlia and, in a perfectly polite and sincere voice, said, "Miss Dahlia, I thank you for the use of your room and sincerely regret the inconvenience it must have caused you. And I offer you my apology for my behavior when we first met."
