Chapter One
Special Agent Jareth Reese finished the dregs of his coffee as the commotion of the bullpen echoed around him.
By no stretch of the imagination was this going to be the erotic Valentine's weekend he'd meticulously planned. He'd canceled the surprise weekend reservations a week ago, when he and his team had first been called in. However, as computer screens flashed the latest intel they had on the Wilderness Killer, as the paper dubbed, Jareth was glad he'd still come prepared.
Never let it be said Jareth didn't always have a plan.
Fellow FBI agents screamed across the room at each other, some on phones coordinating the search, more in each other's faces. Everyone wanted this guy caught and most, though they wouldn't voice it where Internal Affairs could get wind, wanted him dead. In addition to the twenty odd tourists credited to him, The Wilderness Killer had taken out four local Colorado deputy sheriffs, and the two agents who'd managed to track him deep into the woods.
The entire Denver FBI HQ was out for blood.
The walls of the bullpen were covered with maps of Hunter-Fryingpan Wilderness, which wasn't far from the tourist trap known as Aspen. Jareth studied the closest map. Over eighty thousand acres of places to hide, it bordered Mount Massive Wilderness and was the perfect hunting spot for this psychopath. The bastard had holed up here over the winter, and the Colorado-based FBI unit had been unable to flush him out. With the slight February melt, and another tourist missing, Jareth and his team had been called in to catch the bastard.
Jareth had made arrangements for a rental house not far from mobile command, which was just outside the Aspen tourist zone. He had no interest in being housed in one of the RV trailers or tents they'd strung up near command. As far as anyone could tell, between the missing persons reported and the bodies found over the last few months, this killer had been operating for the better part of a year.
It would likely be a while before he and his team could return home to DC.
This was their third serial killer taskforce this year; by all rights they should have been granted leave after their last assignment. But the governor of Colorado had thrown his weight around and got Jareth's team assigned here. Thus proving there was a downside to catching too many bad guys.
Jareth threw the useless cardboard cup into the trash. "Tony!"
Instantly Anthony Conners looked up, acknowledged the call, and took the third member of their team, Sophie Abbott, by the arm and pushed their way through the crowd.
"Who names these places?" Tony was saying as they met Jareth near the doorway. "Mount Massive? Sounds like a problem."
Sophie's sexy laughter slid over him. She said something too low for Jareth to hear. Knowing the pair of them, the reply was loaded with sexual innuendo. It was the game they'd played since they first met. Tony had always intimidated female coworkers with talk that teetered a hair beneath the line of workplace appropriateness.
Until Sophie smashed through that line and dared him. Jareth knew just how that challenged Tony and just how much Tony wanted to control her.
