He smiled at her honesty. "You are safe under the watchful eyes of the gods and goddesses in Pompeii, I assure you. How about another stroll?" he suggested. "Through the old city. You have a passkey, no doubt."

"Yes, I do." Angelica had a sudden flash fantasy of her and Raphael standing together in a room surrounded by people preparing to dance. It conjured up additional images of how they might please each other if all the barriers were down. She kept her expression neutral, but could feel her face tint with pink. What was it about this man?

As they left the lights of the modern town behind, Angelica kept their patter directed on the old city. "The newest excavations are progressing nicely, I understand."

"The archeological students work hard, but their time is limited."

"And great discoveries are being unearthed?"

"Perhaps you'll let me show you."

"It's off-limits to regular employees," she told him, "but I read the archaeology report that came out last winter and they mentioned new frescos in very good shape."

"Well, you have the key to the ruins and I have a key to the new dig."

"I don't want my curiosity to cost me my job, Raphael."

"We'll be very discreet."

It was hopeless. She liked him and he liked her. It had happened easily as their eyes had held each other's gaze while they drank wine and licked their gelatos. Raphael's bewitching smile had made its point. They were young, the moon and stars were out, and they both had a passion about the ruins. And here she was, breaking rules she was hired to enforce. But those rules applied to daylight visitors, not moonlight strolls. Still--
