The Improbability of Porn
* * * *
It's a generally understood fact of life that sexually explicit entertainment--whether you call it erotica, smut, porn, or even romance--is a poor teaching tool. Anyone expecting to learn how to actually engage in sexual acts, let alone relate to another human being and convince them to share in the experience, by reading or viewing things designed as entertainment is as deluded as someone hoping to become an explosives expert by watching action movies.
Yet millions of people do turn to their entertainment hoping to find, if not instruction, then an occasional idea or spark to use in real life. That is much more reasonable--more like watching a chef on TV and deciding to experiment with that ingredient you never used before. The difficulty is that very often, the adventures we read about have a similar level of difficulty or requirement for technical expertise as those high-level competitions we so love to watch. I might grab some smoked paprika to try in my next dish, sure. But I won't be turning out the fancy stuff that superstar chef was making, at least not the first time I try. Or the sixth.
Just as I will try again and again to improve my cooking, so we try again and again to improve sex--even if it's only improving the quality and variety of fantasies.
Cinema Erotica is a collection of stories about people who want to try something for the first time. Yet, unlike the erotica surrounding first-time sex between partners, these are all experienced people. Some are in love, some in lust, some are longtime partners, and others still discovering each other. There are pairs, threesomes, and a foursome. They are straight and bi and gay, and "other." But what they have in common is a desire to look for something more; they risk embarrassment, discomfort, and, worst of all, unintentional hilarity. I wanted to show people at their sexual exploring stage--not virgins, but risk takers.
Ironically, I'm known for writing the kinds of erotic books not only unsuitable for instruction, but absolutely complete fairy tales of dominance and submission. Not that there's anything wrong with that, of course! But here are some sweet, some funny, some awkward stories of people pushing their envelopes in more realistic ways. It is one of my earliest works.
But it's also my most affectionate salute to sexual explorers everywhere.

From the garishly lit lobby of a theater in lower Manhattan, a steady stream of adults spilled onto the sidewalk and the streets beyond. It was a chilly evening, mid-winter, and the crowd evidenced a curious mixture of well-worn leather jackets, sensible down parkas, and elegant fur coats. People gathered in small groups around the displayed posters under the marquee, and there was a strong buzz of conversation all along the block.
"Disgusting," intoned a matron, husband tightly in tow. She was looking at one of the scenes from the film, a single moment's image of a woman in a tightly laced Victorian corset, bound helplessly inside a doorway, her breasts displayed, her mouth filled with what appeared to be a ball on a strap. The woman's husband only nodded in agreement as he meekly followed her toward the street.
Four people looked after the two, and laughed. They too studied the series of photos from the film. "What about you, Guy?" one of the two men said, pointing at another picture. "Did you think it was disgusting?"
"Oh, absolutely! So disgusting, I can't wait to get home." Guy slipped an arm around his wife. "I can think of a few more disgusting things as well...shouldn't we get going?" Allison giggled nervously, and nodded her head toward the movie poster hanging nearby.
"I think we'd better go, before Guy gets any strange ideas," she said, rubbing one hand across his back. "He might begin to think of himself as one of those leather master types."
"Okay...your place or ours? We went out to you last time." William slipped an arm around his own wife and glanced down at her. "Shall we try our house for a change?"
"Yes," she replied softly. "It's closer."
"Whoa, I hear that!" Guy smiled and winked. "In this case, your wish is my command, Terri. I can see that movie is having the same effect on you as it has on me. Let's not waste it." He began to walk steadily toward the nearby parking garage where they had left his car. The other couple followed after one more lingering glance at the posters and promotional photos.
"It wasn't a movie. It was a film, an art film," Jen explained for the tenth time. "You're not supposed to take it literally."
"Oh really? Then what does that mean?" Lisa, Jen's lover, pointed at an excerpt of a review, blown up to seven inches of lettering around one of the framed posters. It read, The most explicit exploration of the dark side of sexuality ever filmed!
"Explicit doesn't mean allegorical," Lisa said. "And it was still full of patriarchal violence against women. The degradation! The humiliation! How would you like it if you were made to wear a dog collar and crawl around like that woman was?"
Jen sighed, pulling her lover away from the theater. "Lisa, you're making a scene."
"Damn right! This is just typical of you...you drag me to some trendy movie, and then expect me to wallow in the obvious manipulation on the screen and thank you for the experience. This was terrible...what about the scene with that, that, dildo!"
"Lisa." Jen ground her teeth together, trying to keep calm. Why did every fight have to become a production number? "Lisa, there were plenty of scenes where men got treated like that too, remember?"
Lisa tossed her blond hair in an angry turn away from the theater, and shrugged her lover's arm from hers. "Yes, but it was clear that they wanted it."
"That's a double standard...Lisa, Lisa, wait..." Jen ran to catch up with her.
"Oh God, that was soooo gross!" A dark-haired woman in a stylish jacket too light for the weather mimed one of the scenes from the film with an expression of exaggerated glee on her face. Her friends, a group of six women close in age and somewhat dressed alike, all shrieked in laughter. Their shoes and dress suggested they had gone out after work on this Friday night.
"No, wait, what about the scene where the red-haired woman dances on the guy wearing those spiked heels? Like, I couldn't even walk in those, let alone dance on someone in them!" More laughter.
"Come on, the best part was that orgy..."
"That wasn't an orgy, it was a gang bang!"
"No! It was an orgy, you could tell."
"Oh, maybe you can tell, Gina!" The young women erupted in laughter and fell into good-natured ribbing as they began their walk toward the nearest subway station. They were loud and friendly, as only a group of women out on the town could be.
"I liked the part with all the rubber stuff."
"Oh, you would, Margaret."
"Well, at least I didn't, you know, moan out loud during the scene with the feathers."
"I did not!"
"Did too! The whole row could hear you!"
"I liked the part with the maid."
"Oh, God, Rox, how could you?"
"Yeah, that was so silly."
"Like, that guy looked sooo stuuupid!"
"If some guy pulled that on me, I'd just barf!"
"Hey, look, girls...there's someone who can't wait 'til they get home."
Their attention all turned toward a couple, the man pressing the woman against a nearby building, pushing her skirt up her leg while he passionately kissed her. The woman's arms were locked tightly around his neck.
"Oh, God, I mean, can't they hold it?"
"I think she is holding it!"
The young women laughed together and began to head for home.
"That was a hot movie."
Mike and David left the theater lobby and stopped by the promotional display. They scanned the reviews posted up and read out loud.
"'Perverse'," David snickered. "Yeah, it was certainly perverse."
"But it was also 'powerfully erotic,' like it says here." Mike looked at the color photos of some of the more notorious scenes. "There wasn't much gay stuff in it."
"Well, we knew that. Besides, you know where to go to look at boys in leather..."
They said at the same time, "The Shaft," and laughed together.
Looking at the crowd and the shortage of taxis, Mike said, "Care to walk across town? We can get home in about twenty minutes."
"I'm not in the mood to go home yet." David stuffed his hands in his pockets and looked carefully at the ground. "But let's walk. I need to talk to you."
"About the movie?" Mike's voice was low and seductive. David looked back up at his lover's eyes and nodded.
"Yeah, me too. Let's take that walk."
They too, passed the couple making out alongside the building, but they were too interested in each other to notice.
Two other people who decided to walk home were Nicole and Eve, who only had about six blocks to go to get to their shared loft. Nicole paused to light a cigarette and coughed at the spectacle of two people practically screwing in plain view of the entire street. She tugged on Eve's arm and pointed.
"See," she said, with a slight giggle. "We weren't the only ones to get the message!"
Eve laughed and nodded, her black eyes dancing. "Well? What do you say?" she asked. "Shall we go ahead with plan A, or not? Let's face it, we're never going to get this psyched again."
Nicole bit her lip and continued walking, a little more serious. "I don't know, Eve. I mean, we have no idea if he's even into this stuff. He could have a girlfriend we haven't seen, you know. Or maybe he's gay! I mean, we really haven't thought this out very much."
"Where is your sense of adventure, girl?" Eve demanded, catching up. "If he's unavailable, he's unavailable. But in the meantime, we haven't done this in months! And I tell you, I know the signs.! He's definitely into this."
Nicole looked at her dark friend, pretending hesitation for one more moment, and then laughed again. "Okay, okay, you win. But I get him first."
"No way, sister, if I do all the work, I get the payoff."
"We'll flip for him."
They walked home, their pace increasing as they went.

"Well, so that was the movie everyone's talking about." Marsha pulled her coat tighter around herself, keeping a watchful eye out for purse-snatchers.
"Ha! You can say that again." She took her husband's arm as they walked out under the marquee. "Do you remember where you parked the car?"
Bob looked back at her patiently. "Sure, down that way a few blocks. Do you want to wait here, and I'll pick you up?"
"No, no, let's just walk. After all that sitting, I need the exercise."
"Odd mix of people in this crowd, wasn't it?"
"Well, it is the hottest art movie playing right now. I guess it's all the desire to be trendy...I mean, we wouldn't have come if Steve and Brenda hadn't been pushing us for so long."
"Well, it wasn't so bad. Just...weird."
"Yes, it was certainly weird."
They walked in silence for a moment, hearing snatches of conversation and the shrill laughter of a group of women who seemed to be comparing favorite parts of the film. As they passed the couple making out against the neighboring building, Marsha gripped her husband's arm tighter. She waited until they were out of earshot and said, "I think it's terrible what some people think they can do in public. Couldn't they have waited?"
Bob nodded, thinking of their warm bedroom at home, and he bent down to gently kiss her cheek. "I can hardly wait."
It worked. Marsha relaxed on his arm and pressed closer to him. "And I want you, honey. Let's get home."
They walked a little bit faster.
"I don't fucking believe that we came all the way out here to see that fucking sick excuse for a movie," Greg reported. Profanity always served as his punctuation when he was pissed.
"Hey, it was all right," Alan said, scooping the last of his popcorn out of the bag. "Some of it was hot. I liked the part with that rack thing. Think we could build something like that in the living room? Couldja imagine trying to explain it to la date du jour?"
"Yeah, sure. Come on in, darling. Oh, that? It's a, a coffee table!" Greg mimed ushering someone through his arms. "Yeah, that's it, a coffee table. It doesn't mean I'm kinky and want to tie you up and do disgusting things with you, no way!" He shook his head again. "Stupid fucking movie, a waste of time, money, and now we have to get all the way back home, and I swear, if Annie wants to see this fucking thing next week, I'm gonna give her a ticket and go play pool down the block."
"You would. You know what you are, Greg? You are one uncultured motherfucker, that's what you are." Alan tossed his balled-up garbage into a trash can and began to dig through his pockets for a subway token. "That was a hot movie. I know I'm not ready to hit the sack yet. Wanna watch that sorority babes video again, and work it off with me?"
"I got nothing to work off, asshole. You watch the babes. I'll be sleeping like one!" He laughed at his own joke. "How you can get anything out of that sick shit is amazing. Maybe I should warn what's-her-name. Tell her what a fucking pervert you are."
"I'd rather be a pervert than a moron, dickface!"
Mark pulled Thea's skirt up higher so it almost bunched around her waist. It was only his knee pressed into the hot wedge between her legs that kept her pussy shielded from the passersby. From time to time, he whispered overheard comments into her ear, telling her how many people were seeing them, and what they thought of her. "You're a slut, you know...displayed like a cheap Forty-Second Street whore, and all these people know it."
She moaned and squirmed under him and gripped him tighter. "Do it, do it now! Let's just do it in front of everyone, please!"
He slipped a hand between them, sliding it along her wetness, teasing, pulling on her hairs and making her arch against him.
"You'd like it now if I fucked you, wouldn't you? You'd love my big dick slapping into you right out here on the street, with everyone watching. Tell me, say it right."
"I want you...I want you to fuck me, oh, God, please..." Thea pushed her hips forward into him. She shuddered in erotic anticipation, reaching for him, holding his hand between her thighs. Suddenly he laughed and pulled away from her, his hand glistening with her juices. Casually, he wiped it across her face, then raised that same hand to hail a cab, leaving her to smooth her skirt back down across her thighs, allowing a few people a glimpse of her bare pussy.
As the two of them got into the cab, no one, including them, could believe they just met barely two hours ago.
As the crowd thinned and the marquee lights dimmed and went out, once again the cashier notoced how the people leaving this particular film always seemed to be in a hurry to get home.
