This couldn't be. No one within this compound looked like this. Though, he knew exactly who did. But it was impossible. The solar people couldn't go out into the night, just as the lunar couldn't go out into the day. "Hey! What do you think you're doing?" he called to the person shaking and sniffling. Not missing a step, he moved until he stood in front of her. Brilliant amber eyes turned to meet his gaze. A mane of long, curled blonde hair shimmered even in this part of town. Her luminous skin, bronze from exposure to the sun shone under the sliver of moonlight seeping from above. She held something tight around her left hand, while her right reached helped keep it steady. What was she doing? The more he neared the more details he captured. Her raged breath broke into another sob. A combination of tears and sweat dirtied her pretty face, as well as her hair. She tried to say something, but the exertion cut her off every time. He stood above her, glared down. A silver chain was wrapped twice around her left hand. She tried to drag it upward without much success. The length littered along the underbrush and disappeared down one of the many dips in this land, all booby traps to catch out any intruders. Had her companion met a hasty slide down a hole? "What do you think you're doing?" He knelled in front of her, ready to do whatever it took to keep his people safe. "Are you trying to break into our compound?"

Chapter One

Sometime in the future

Pre-dawn, November

Within the Lunar Compound perimeter, Sydney

The approach of morning tugged within Silver, reminding him that another night was almost over. Both his heart and soul felt the weight of a new day slowly seep into his very essence. Soon, he'd be forced to retire indoors, just as everyone else in the Lunar Compound already had. Sunlight was not their friend, but he'd always pushed as far into the early twilight hours before sunrise as he could.

Some would call it tempting fate. He just called it living life to the very limits forced upon him at birth.

He loved a challenge, and nowadays, he'd been assigned the sole responsibility of performing a final perimeter check before the sun rose for the day. So far, as he made his way around the bush-land area surrounding the concrete and steel monstrosity of the compound, everything seemed clear. No one lay hidden in the shadows of the wooded area, waiting to attack once their defenses were down during daylight. The Lunar people's only true vulnerability came at dawn.

Their leader, Selene--who also happened to be his sister--had always been a paranoid person. Freak would be a more accurate label. Still, her insistence of these daily checks had kept them safe from harm for years.

She might be an arrogant bitch sometimes, but she knew how to help their kind hide in plain sight.

Silver stepped slowly and carefully around the rough plant growth encircling his home, trying not to get his ankles snaked around the tangle of roots, grass, and branches. His boots cushioned his feet, and his jeans protected his legs from constant scratching. He lifted the hood of his jacket over his head. No need to expose himself to the danger his body wouldn't recover from entirely. UV rays were poisonous to his skin.

A noise to the left caught his attention. For a moment, he considered ignoring it, then thought better of it. Maybe he'd gotten a little cocky lately, not checking the perimeter as thoroughly as he should because he disliked taking direct orders from his sister. This wasn't about sibling rivalry, though. That noise hadn't been made on its own. I have to check it out.

He paused to listen, straining to hear what he thought sounded like someone sobbing not too far from where he stood.

Silver sniffed the cool morning air, and instantly knew he wasn't alone. Someone else was out here with him, roaming what was left of the night, and it wasn't one of his people. Who would dare to cross the fence and get this close to their compound? Obviously someone who didn't value their life. His sister's wrath was well-known amongst both the Lunar and the Solar who dared to challenge her authority. Not that anyone had in a long time. Nowadays, each clan kept to themselves, hidden behind their separate facades--located on opposite sides of the city.

Selene wouldn't hesitate to kill anyone she considered an enemy. She wouldn't care if they were human or Solar."An enemy is an enemy", she would always say.

He trudged forward, quickening his pace and carefully avoiding the swinging branches and vines whipping at his face. The sky above lightened a little more with his every step. Soon, he'd have no choice but to surrender to his room.

The thought pushed him forward.

Silver wandered around the large tree trunk before him, but stopped when he got around to the other side.

This couldn't be. No one within this compound looked like this. He knew exactly who did. Though, it was impossible. The Solar couldn't wander out after nightfall, just as the Lunar couldn't step out into the daylight.
