-

It has been thirty years, almost to the day, since I left my home in the South and came West to the state of California. I am not yet an elderly man, but neither am I still young. Mortals may not predestine how long they will dwell upon this good earth, thus I have determined to record those events which brought me across our vast country to start a new life.

I am fairly certain that my parents are no longer living, though my brothers probably are -- hopefully blessed with wives and offspring of their own. I intend to make arrangements with a solicitor so that these pages will reach my kin in Maryland (or wherever they may now be) upon my demise. No doubt it will surprise them to learn that my death did not occur some three decades ago.

I see no need to begin with my birth and subsequent childhood, as they were both unremarkable. Instead, I'll commence with the events of my rebirth at the age of twenty-two.
