After a while, the man placed a large cake box in the middle of the table. He opened the lid so that the woman across the table from him could see its contents. Dodge then heard a little squeal, which had to come from Jessie. He wondered what had brought that on. Then the man was reaching under the table for something. In his hand was what looked like a ring box. The man had obviously gone the distance with all of his preparations for the proposal.

Dodge felt suddenly resentful of this wealthy aristocrat, who had the nerve to woo his ex-wife in his very own restaurant. The ring box soon lay open on the table in front of Jessie. There was another little cry from her. How Dodge wished he could see her face, could see the expression she wore. But, all he could see was one dainty hand as she reached out to take the ring box. Then he heard her exclamation.

"Gerard, it's absolutely breathtaking. I have never seen anything so beautiful."

Though he could not see Jessie's face, he could clearly see her hands and arms. Dodge watched as she took Gerard's outstretched hand in hers. She caressed the man's large hand with her own, repeatedly. He couldn't hear the words that passed between them. Dodge watched them for what seemed an eternity to him. Then, finally, the pair stood up from the table. He could see Jessie plainly now, as she threw her arms around the man's neck and embraced him for a long while. Then she planted a long deliberate kiss upon his lips.
