My mother was waiting at the foot of the stairs. "I suppose you are proud of yourself? Embarrassing me like that, ruining a perfectly good dinner party and losing the chance to be invited to the dance by Nathan Arcon. How could you?"

I tried to step around her but she grabbed my arm. "Where do you think you're going?"

"I've already told you." I shook loose from her grip and moved away.

Grabbing my shoulders, she spun me around and slammed my back flat against the wall. My skull bounced back with a crack. Although no athlete, my mother was still surprisingly strong.

"I am your mother. I think it's time I was treated with a little respect. When Margaret comes today for the fitting, you will cooperate and you will be civil. You are going to the dance and you had better start getting used to the idea."

"I would not attend that dance if I was dragged there in chains."
