From the Desk of A.P. Fuchs -This is crazy. Last night, at 3:49 a.m., I wrapped up Bumper Sticker Shine No. 1: Dry Ice Dreams and sent it off to the printer along with most of the eBook distributors I deal with. Now I'm writing the "From the Desk of A.P. Fuchs" for this issue, The Macro Mechanic's Manifesto, not even twenty-four hours later. Just goes to show how jazzed I am about the Bumper Sticker Shine project and how much fun I'm having putting it all together. And that's what creating is all about, right? Fun. First and foremost. Always. Without that part--when things go dark and it becomes a job--then there's really no point, is there? I mean, really, what got you into creating to begin with? It was the fun, right? You got enjoyment out of it. There was a thrill, perhaps even a chill, and when all was said and done and you looked at your story or drawing or listened to your track--you smiled, felt all those warmy gushies inside and was already getting ready to do it again. I couldn't wait to get things started on this issue despite my finally going to bed around 5 a.m. last night, battling a headache all day and not getting anything done till after eight o'clock aside from checking a few emails and a couple admin chores I do on daily basis. As I write this introduction, I've already put together most of this issue, the only things missing being some artwork, the text for the "A Look Back" segments, and the "5Qs on Self-publishing." Realistically, if all goes well, I can have this issue done--as in print-ready, cover done, ready-to-rock--by Monday, perhaps sooner. The only thing I'm not 100% sure on--hence the possibly-till-Monday part--is the cover. Not sure what's going to go on it yet and I don't want to assemble any old thing for the sake of speed. I have a few ideas, but nothing concrete. Anyway, back to this the meat of this issue. It's called The Macro Mechanic's Manifesto. A "manifesto," as you know, is basically a public declaration of purpose and objectives and intentions by an organization, political or otherwise. Well, I'm not sure if a single person could be considered an "organization" or not, but I do run my own company and am a one-man band in many respects, so please accept the following as my intention to show you the pros and cons about independent publishing and some tips on how to go about doing it. I consider myself a "macro mechanic" because I do like to fiddle and tinker in a big way, mainly by building and repairing words and transforming them into something digestible for the public. As mentioned last issue, the entire Bumper Sticker Shine series is meant to one day become an manual on how to go about self-publishing without screwing yourself over, as many first-time--or even tenth-time--self-publishers do. At the same time, the primary objective of this publication--and the series as a whole--is to provide solid, fun entertainment by way of stories, poems, articles and the other do-dads in its pages. Welcome to Issue Two, or should I say Book Two? Part Two? I don't know and I don't care. This is a bookazine, a book/magazine hybrid, so how about Bissue Two? Anyway ... welcome, and read on. - A.P.
